People on the Subway: Pyro

Welcome to the 6th floor

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today's contributors are: Ann, Sara, Billy and Scott.

Subject: People on the Subway: The Pyro

“I saw a pyromaniac on the subway today.”

“They have a word for those guys, they're called Terrorists.”

“No, not a guy a with a bomb silly. It was just a kid..probably about 16. He was just burning this long thin string.”

“Whatever keeps you occupied I guess. I'm convinced there is nothing strange that can't be made stranger by putting it in a subway car.”

“Especially one headed to Brooklyn.”

“So he just lit the string and watched it?”

“Yeah. Pretty much. He was sorta making an effort to hide it to his side, but it was pretty obvious what he was doing, and it did create a faint odor.”

“I love the smell of burning rope in the morning!”

“Better than whatever mush Sara heated up this morning.”

“Hey! Don't knock my mush!”

“It smelled like...melted feet.”

“Melted feet?! What the hell is that?”

“Interesting to say the least.”

“The pyro got off two stops later. Guess he just couldn't just sit for 10 minutes. I wonder what else he burned before he got home.”

“Trash cans, tourists, empty Starbucks cups..”

“Payphones.”

“Probably doesn't have the attention span to find a payphone.”

“Well, I'm sure we'll here from him again if he starts burning tourists.”

“Probably.”

More Maria Bartiromo

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today's contributors are: Ann, Sara, Frank, Billy.

Subject: The MTA is still at it

“Did you see this article on Monday's Times? It's about the Maria Bartiromo ads I was ranting about.”

“No I didn't. Why, did they mention the blog?”

“No, shockingly it seems like they don't read it. It was talking about how most people don't really remember the message, and that they find them annoying.”

“Well, you scooped them on that. You should email the columnist a link to the entry.”

“Isn't that a little tacky?”

“So? Worst case is she ignores you. Email her from the blog email address, it's virtually anonymous then. Did they say they were going to do away with the announcements?”

“No,” Says Sara, looking up from the paper. “Looks like they added Al Roker to the mix.”

“The article wasn't even that good. It likened the spots to a previous ad campaign to have celebrities try to convince taxi riders to buckle up.”

“I heard about that one. Screw the celebrities, let me do the announcements!”

“I think I'd get tired of hearing your voice too. The article mentions Al Roker, but it doesn't mention that they also added one of the 1010wins voices, I can't remember who though. Not driving much I don't listen.”

“At least it's just on the fringe services, not the main subway lines.”

“Still annoying if you're spending any length of time in Penn or Grand Central though.”

“It says they're on a timer, but I've definitely heard it three times in a quick span, and not at all during other times.”

“The other ones were pretty loud and jarring, but the Roker one was actually too quiet. You might not even hear it.”

“Hey Ann, you going to try to do another horrendous job of photoshopping Jose Reyes onto the 7 train image?”

“No, I gave up. The problem was I couldn't find a nice 7 train image online to use. Although if your going to email that post, maybe I should make it better..”

“I said you should email it, not me. You couldn't find the logo? I'm sure there are a million of them on google images.”

“You're welcome to try to do better.”

“Intriguing challenge. Maybe I will..”

Train Ride to the Complaints Department

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today's contributors are: Sara, Tabitha, Frank, Billy

Subject: Local Train to the Complaint Department

“Ugh!” Sara says, tossing her bag on the counter as she arrives home. “I hate the MTA.”

“What’d they do now? You get a ticket for having your feet on a seat or something?”

“It was a combination of things really. It just led to a bad day. It started by my 30-day Metrocard running out without me realizing it.”

“So? It happens every 30 days right? How surprising could it be?”

“Well it wouldn’t be a surprise if I’d remember when I bought it, but I forgot to make a note of it, and I guess the month went by faster than I imagined. Some warning would be nice you’d think? Like if you had less than 24 hours left on the card? You listening Billy?”

Billy looks up from watching tv. Huh? Yeah, a warning would be nice I guess. I don’t know, mine doesn’t expire.”

“Well aren’t you just so special! You have to be able to do something at work. Put in a suggestion or something.”

“I’m just a worker bee. I have no more say than you do. I guess the card readers just aren’t set up to display that information. You do know they expire 30 days from first use right? So you can buy a second one anytime and just pull it out of your wallet when the first expires?”

“Really? I didn’t know that.”

“Oh. Well still, a warning would be nice. The thing has to compare the current date to the expiration date, so it wouldn’t hurt to display the difference.”

“Well, the subway often seems no frills. It’s better than a lot of other places though.”

“No frills? Kind of like Billy’s cooking.”

“So I like simple foods. Nothing wrong with that. Why do I need sun-dried tomatoes in my pasta or fancy cheese on my burger?”

“Fancy food can taste good too. Another thing, would it be so hard to allow me to refill my 30-day Metrocard? It wouldn’t have been that big a deal, it only would’ve cost me a minute if the machine had decided to accept my credit card. Of course it decided not to be able to read it.”

“I get that a lot too actually.”

“Did you try a little sugar?”

“Sugar?”

“Yeah. You know, be nice to it. Treat it well. Maybe you were rude to it and it decided not to accept your card out of spite.”

“So I’m supposed to what? Flirt with it? Oh Metrocard machine, you’re so pretty! Here, let me clean the stray Metrocards off your head. There, isn’t that better?”

“Yeah, that should do it.” Frank says, laughing.

Shack Shack Snack

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today's contributors are: Ann, Sara, Tabitha, Frank, Billy and Scott.

Subject: Shake Shack Snack

I arrived home yesterday in the afternoon to find all five of my roommates home and bustling about in the living room.

“And there's Ann. Now we have to go!”

“Where are we going?”

“Sara insisted since we all seemed to be around this evening, we should all get dinner together. You just clinch the deal. We'd decided on Shake Shack if that's okay with you?”

“Sounds excellent, let me just put my stuff down and check my mail.”

“Now remember, behave yourselves on my train.” Billy says as we board the 6 train.

We take an uneventful train ride down to 23rd street and start walking over to Madison Square Park, where Shake Shack is. It's a nice evening, and lots of people have the same idea. It's a popular spot anyway, so no one is surprised when we get on line with what looks like at least a 30 minute wait before we can order food.

“Burger, or hot dog? So many tough decisions today.”

“Tough decisions? What else did you have to decide today?”

“Well I had to decide whether I wanted to suffer through the View, or get up and find the remote.”

“What'd you decide?”

“I don't remember. I feel asleep and when I woke up Frank was watching some poker game.”

“Don't you ever get enough poker?”

“Would you believe me if I said I was studying for work?” Frank says, feigning innocence.

“Where are you going Billy?” Ann asks as Billy suddenly starts walking away.

“Going into the McDonalds to use the bathroom. I'll be right back.”

Conversation dies down a bit as we continue to wait in line, contemplate what we're going to order and watch and listen to the people and dogs around us. Many people bring their dogs to this park anyway, and with the weather finally becoming warmer, there are a ton of people taking advantage by walking their dogs.

Man in front of us: “So do you think they're real?”

Woman with him: “I don't know. I'm really curious, how do we find out?”

Man: “I know someone at work that could find out.”

Woman: “Okay. We'll have to arrange something then.”

I have no idea what they were talking about, but just then Billy came back, carrying a large container of fries and I stopped listening.

“Billy! You're going to ruin your appetite!”

“It's just a couple of fries. Relax. You want some?”

“OOo, I'll take some.

“Do I want custard with my dinner?”

“Of course!”

“Well what are you getting to eat?”

“Definitely a Chicago dog, I love those things. And probably a double shack burger.”

“That's a lot of food. It depends on the flavor then.”

“The flavor's cinnamon toast, I checked before we left. I'd say go for it, it sounds tasty.”

“Okay, but if it's too much, I'm vomiting in your bathroom.”

“We're almost to the front of the line! Yah! Let Sara go first.”

“Why me?”

“Because you eat so slowly. You need the head start.”

“Good idea.”

We ordered our food and found two tables, pushed them together and began eating out food.

“This frozen custard tastes a little like Cinnamon Toast Crunch.”

“Really? I love Cinnamon Toast Crunch! Let me try some!”

“You can have it. I'm full.”

“This was a good idea. Who decided we should go here?”

“I think it was me. One of the customers this morning was talking about it. Put me in the mood.”

“Wasn't that me? You put way too much whipped cream on my frappachino and then I told you we should goto Shake Shack for dinner.”

“Oh. That was you? I'm so in the zone when I'm baristaing that I don't notice who I'm serving.”

“Bullshit. I always see you noticing those two hot girls that come in around three on Fridays.”

“I see you know exactly when they come in too.”

“I never said that I didn't notice them though.”

“Yes Yes, girls are cute. It was Sara that suggested this place for dinner. Excellent choice. Let's go home now.”
