Leftovers For a Week

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today's contributors are: Ann, Sara, Tabitha, Frank, Billy and Scott.

Subject: Could there be anymore food?

I hate to say it, but I'm full.”

Ann fakes surprise, “You'd better be, after all that.”

I think he ate for three.”

At least.”

Yet we're still going to have leftovers.”

That's a good thing. Leftovers are the best part of Thanksgiving.”

I'm good with Turkey for one day, I don't think I could handle it as dinner all weekend. That's on you guys.”

Gladly. Just make sure there is some stuffing and potatoes for me to eat with it.”

We'll take care of removing the leftovers this weekend. It'll be a clean start by Monday.”

I think us girls can take care of the pies.” Tabitha says, with a wink to Ann and Sara.

Dibs on the chocolate crème.”

I'm partial to the mincemeat tarts myself.”

You're not going to share any of the dessert?” Billy pouts.

Maybe a little.”

That cheesecake looks scrumptious.”

We can share some, we've got way too many desserts anyway.”

Should we do one of those round robin “What I'm thankful for” things?”

No.”

Lame.”

Pass.”

Fine, but I'm going back to the monthly 'Tell me about December' post for the blog. Think about it.”

Can we reuse last years?”

No.”

Billy groans.”

Maybe I'll think of a slightly different question this year. Hey..where's Frank?”

Everyone looks around and notices Frank has left the table and is asleep on the couch.

We've got our first Tryptophan casualty!”

Who had Frank in the pool?”

That'd be me.”

Everyone hands Scott five dollars.

Dinner is Served

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today's contributors are: Ann, Sara, Tabitha, Frank, Billy and Scott.

Subject: Dinner Time

I realize it's well past Thanksgiving. Normally I would've just let this one slide, but I figure I should at least finish the story since I left it as a kind of cliffhanger. If you need a refresher on what was happening, go here and here. Otherwise, just remember that I bet Billy he wouldn't eat the potatoes before dinner.

Dinner is served!”

Yah! So where are the potatoes? Did Billy get to them?”

Nope, I never left the ki..” Ann trails off as she opens the dish with the potatoes to see a big scoop missing.”

Billy! How'd you get in here?”

I'll never tell!”

I was here the whole time!”

Evidently not. You lost. We can still eat though right?”

Everyone grab a plate and sit down.”

It all smells so good!”

They all sit down and take turns passing around the bowls and platters and filling their plates with food.

We should all take a minute and go around the table and say what we're thankful for.”

Nope.”

Uh-Uh.”

Yeah. It's food time, no more waiting!”

Scott digs in, and everyone else starts in too. It's silent for a little while as they really get into the meal.

Thanks for cooking Ann.” Sara says between bites. “Everything really is delicious.”

Well except for this stuffing.” Ann says, making a face. “I'm not sure If I messed it up, or it's just a horrible recipe.” Ann slides the rest of the stuffing off her plate back into the bowl.

Oh good. If you're not eating it, I don't have to. I was going to feed it to the dog, but then I remembered we don't have a dog!”

Well, sort of.” Sara says, nodding towards Billy, who's busy filling up his plate a third helping of turkey.

You said it best. Everything tastes delicious! I'm eating Tabitha's share.”

Well gee, ain't that sweet of you?”

You know, I'm kind of glad my parents went to Vegas and we're all here for this holiday. This is fun spending it with you guys.”

We should definitely do it again. Family be damned!”

Maybe next year you'll even be better at guarding the potatoes.”

I'll have to go into dinner-guarding training or something. We never really made an official bet though, so what did I lose?”

Well I was trying to think of something good, but that meal left me satisfied enough that let's just leave it at you buying me a drink or two next time we go out.”

Fair enough. How about something with vodka? It is made with potatoes after all.”

Vodka works for me!”

Then they all finished their meal in merriment, spending the rest of the evening watching sports, eating dessert and having fun. If you're keeping score, it turns out Sara was the first to succumb and take a nap. She fell asleep shortly after dinner after lounging on the couch and Scott stole her drink. Tabitha thinks she was just trying to avoid helping to clean up.

A 6th Floor Thanksgiving: The Potato Wager

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today's contributors are: Ann, Sara, Tabitha, Frank, Billy and Scott.

Subject: a 6th Floor Thanksgiving Story, part two

2:15-

Mmm! Something smells good!” Sara says, as she walks into the apartment after having left for an after-brunch walk with Tabitha and Frank.

Could it be Turkey?”

That would be my guess. How's the game?”

Brett Farve's destroying the lions.”

Nice..by the smell...4 hours until dinner?”

About that, yes. Good guess.”

Thy nose never lies.”

Either that, or because I told you dinner was at about 6:30 earlier.”

No, it's the nose.”

So we having mid-meal appetizers here?”

Geeze Billy, don't you ever take a break?”

Breaks are for the weak!”

And the thin.”

Hey now. That wasn't nice. I just put on my holiday weight preemptively!”

Of course you did dear. I'll cook up those appetizers Tabitha bought.”

You bought appetizers? With me?”

You were preoccupied with trying to find a smaller turkey. I got us some pigs in a blanket, some jalapeno poppers, some fennel and olives, and the usual chips and dip.”

Now that's what I'm talking about!”

Pass the chips and veggies. They should tide us over until the pigs come out.”

"I thought you two were already sitting on the couch?"

"Wow Sara, you're really on today."

"Just a little revenge. They're always like that."

"These chips are good! What kind are they?"

"Potato."

"Nice! Good choice Tabitha!"

"Speaking of potato, what kind of potato are we eating with dinner?"

"I've got a nice garlic mashed potato recipe going over here. My aunt's recipe."

"Mmm...mashed potatoes."

"Does anyone know what the difference is between mashed and smashed potatoes? You seem them both in restaurants sometimes. Are they the same thing?"

"Maybe how violently they're prepared? Smashed potatoes are prepared by throwing them at walls and hitting them with hammers?"

"That seems unlikely. I always thought smashed potatoes seemed thicker, but I don't know why."

"I looked it up once. They are generally thicker. The main difference is that smashed potatoes aren't whipped. Once you use an electric mixer you start to get more of a whipped feel to them and then they become mashed potatoes instead."

"Maybe I should mix them by hand so they're smashed potatoes?"

"Whatever's faster."

"It doesn't matter what's faster, you're not getting them until dinner time either way."

"Wanna bet?"

"That's not a bet you want to take Billy."

“Oh yes it is!”

Others: “Dun Dun Dun!”

Will Billy manage to eat the potatoes right under Ann’s nose, or will Ann successfully defend the spuds until dinner?

Will dinner turn out alright, or will Ann horribly burn everyone so that we’re vomiting all night?

Who will be the first to fall to the tryptophan and take a nap?

To find out, stay tuned for another episode of “As the 6th Floor turns.”

To Be Continued....

Playoff Race

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today's contributors are: Sara, Frank

Subject: Playoffs

Argh!!” shouts Sara, throwing a newspaper across the room as the Mets lose in extra innings.

Wow. They lost again huh? Some bullpen. I bet they don't even make the playoffs.”

You're on. They'll still make the playoffs. The Phillies are worse.” Says Sara, somewhat unconvincingly.

Let's make it better, I bet the Yankees go farther in the playoffs than the Mets.”

$100?”

Sounds good. It's win-win for you; If the Mets choke, you lose $100 but get refunding your playoff tickets.”

I don't know if my heart can take them not making the playoffs. I might have to take that money and pay for the hospital bill, or at least therapy.”

Doesn't surprise me that a Mets fan needs therapy, I mean you decided to vote for a loser in the first place.”

Sara throws the newspaper she had just retrieved at Frank. “Cocky aren't we? I think you'll find the Yankees have played their cards a little early, and will have nothing left in the postseason.”

They've got plenty of cards, don't you worry yourself about it.”

Oh yeah? Wanna bet?!”

We just did dear.” Frank says, patting Sara on the head with the newspaper as he walks back to his room.

Nothing Loosens Lips Like Alcohol

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today's contributors are: Ann, Sara, Tabitha, Frank, Billy and Scott.

Subject: Nothing loosens the lips like alcohol

After the game Friday night me and Frank headed over to Union Square to meet the rest of the gang. As we get off the train I call them and it turns out they've also just arrived, so we all go to Max Brenner together. We're about to head in when we're stopped by someone calling most of our names. It's Amy and Sue, two girls who used to live on our floor before moving in with their respective boyfriends. Sue is actually getting married in a couple of months.

Sue: “Hey guys! It's funny running into you, especially today! Me and Amy just decided to meet up and go out and have some drinks tonight. You should come with us, it'll be just like old times!”

I'm in, are you guys okay with skipping chocolate tonight?”

It's a tough choice, but I guess I can skip chocolate for these two...as long as one of them buys me a chocolate Martini where ever we're going.”

Amy: “Certainly! I'll do it, Sue should be saving for her wedding!”

Did you pick a date yet?”

Sue: “Not quite yet, we're decided between two dates in the spring of '08. So what are guys doing out besides getting chocolate?”

We were grabbing dinner at the Corner Bistro, and we just met up with Sara and Frank returning from the game.”

Amy: “The Met game? How'd they do?”

Mets won 3-2, Pettite thought Endy was bunting, instead he swung and hit a two run home run. One more win and Frank loses our bet.”

Amy: “Oooh, a bet. That sounds like fun. You guys going to any more of the games?”

Nope, I'll have to wait until they come to Yankee Stadium to see them beat the Mets I guess.”

We arrived at the bar Amy and Sue were headed to, and found ourselves a semi-empty corner to hang out in. As is typical when we go out to bars, we ended up forming a circle so that we could all talk to each other.

Sue: “You guys look like you're already a little tipsy, a bit too many beers with dinner?”

You know we can never pass up those McSorley's. It's just a shame that the real bar is always so jam packed.”

We had a couple of beers ourself at Shea. It's such a rip off but I can't help myself.”

Just trying to drown your sorrows huh Frank?”

Absolutely.”

Sue: “So what's new with everyone? What have you guys been up to? Any dates recently?”

I was on a date just last night actually. It was kind of a bore.”

You never did mention how that went. I noticed you didn't come back with him and you certainly weren't home very late.”

Well you know he was a guy from work. He really seemed to not want to talk about anything except work. We talked office politics, coding solutions...it was just like lunch in the cafeteria.”

What a snooze.”

Exactly, I didn't even have to make up an excuse to part ways after dinner, he wanted to go home because we had work the next morning.”

As I recall, you're asleep early most nights too.”

Yeah yeah, we don't all have the luxury of your schedule.”

Amy: “Still doing well with the Poker I take it?”

It pays the bills, and it certainly beats rising with the sun and trudging off to work.”

Sue “I imagine it would. So Tabitha, you think you did well on your finals?”

I think so yeah, I wish I didn't have to wait so long to find out my grades.”

Tab, are you chewing on the appetizers menu?”

Tabitha pulls the wad of paper out of her mouth and opens it up. “Looks like it, you want more food?”

I'm not into paper as a snack actually, I'll pass.”

Sue “So how about the rest of you? Anything to write home about?”

I drove the M train this week!”

Yes, that's all very exciting. You still travel a lot for work Amy?”

Amy: “Not quite as much, but still some. I have more seniority now that one of the older guys quit. Means I get to pick and choose more about which trips to take. Last week I was actually in Vegas; best trip for work ever.”

I bet. You should have told me, I would've flown with you. I rarely pass up an excuse to go to Vegas, it's like my Mecca.”

Yeah, he actually makes sure every time he plays poker on-line he faces towards Las Vegas.”

Amy: “Ha! Well maybe next time I go out there I'll give you a call. I assume you feel much the same about other gambling places? Atlantic City? Reno?”

Yup, although AC is close enough that I really don't need an excuse to go there.”

We continued chatting and drinking and having a grand time late into the night, but none of us really remember much after that. Tabitha did develop a small cut on her lip, and Frank's arm felt sore the next day, and it certainly wasn't from cheering for the Yankees.

The Mets slaughtered the Yankees on Saturday, having starting pitcher Darrel Rasner leave with a broken finger in the first inning killed them. The Yankees managed to eke out the third game so Frank will not be my slave, but he does owe me a couple of drinks. I'm thinking of ordering every drink with top shelf liquor.

Subway Series Bet

Welcome to the 6th floor.

Today's contributors are: Sara, Frank

Subject: Subway Series Bet

Ann's been bugging me to make a post about my friend who visited Monday. It would link in with an earlier post she made and she wants to try to have some post continuity on the blog, but I don't feel like writing about that right now. She'll have to settle for a post about the wager me and Sara made on the ballgames this weekend.

That was an awesome win yesterday, the Yankees don't have a prayer to stop that kind of momentum.”

The Yankees are going to start hitting eventually, it very well could be tonight. That is if Oliver Perez can find the plate, otherwise we'll just walk all over you.”

Oh, he'll find the plate. Maybe he'll even allow less hits then his last outing.”

There is no way the Yankees are being no-hit! Don't be ridiculous. I think the Yankees will come out of it, they're due for one of these 12 of 15 stretches to get right back in it. The Mets and the Red Sox are due for some losing too.”

I wouldn't count on that. Would you like to bet on it?”

Sure, what should we wager?”

If the Mets win the series, you buy my alcohol when we go out next weekend. If the Yankees win, I'll buy yours. Either way we go up to the roof Monday night to see the http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20070517&content_id=1970755&vkey=pr_nym&fext=.jsp&c_id=nym”> Empire State Building displaying the colors of the victors.”

Sounds good, but lets make it a little richer. If either team sweeps, we do the whole slave thing. You serve me my food, get me a drink when I ask..etc. Nothing crazy, just the normal stuff I don't feel like getting up to do.”

Sounds good to me. I'll have you take out the trash, or update the blog when Ann starts in on me.”

Speaking of which, weren't you supposed to update about your date as part of Ann's continuity thing? How'd it go?”

It was..interesting. I will update, I just got back a little late and worked all day today and then we're going to Shea tonight.”

Maybe we should escape to Shea before Ann notices we haven't updated like she asked.”
